Marvel Graphic Novel #1 / Death of Captain Marvel graphic novel, 1982 - Exposed to radiation poisoning in Captain Marvel #34, the hero faces his imminent death from cancer. Jim Starlin's cover pays homage to Michelangelo's Pietà amidst a background of various Marvel heroes. The interior story is the artist's longest to date, interspersed with four bold splash pages. Starlin's art meshes well with his writing, especially the poignant scene between Captain Marvel and former sidekick Rick Jones. Although the character would eventually be resurrected (in different forms), this graphic novel still stands out for its superb handling of the death of a superhero. This is 1 of 2 Marvel Graphic Novel issues by Starlin. /// original page
